At Birch Hill Station Cemetery in North Canterbury is a large curved stone monument officially opened in 1937 by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Bowler Millton.

There are two plaques the first reads “In Memory of the Horses of the 8th Regiment N.Z.M.R. that died in the Great War 1914 – 1918.

The other plaque is dedicated to the 10 men who served from Birch Hill Station. (see our history page re these men)

We intend to ride to Birch Hill Station Cemetery and gather for a dedication service to mark the 100th Anniversary of the  NZ Military Horses that served in World War 1.

This memorial has been nominated for New Zealand Heritage Listing and submissions are wanted-see their site.

In 2007 Marcus J Wilson wrote in his thesis -

"with unquestionable willingness, patience and loyalty they yielded their last traces of energy to honour the duty placed upon them.

They deserved many a medal but were never given one..."
