Memorial Rides & Walks

Cost:         $20 adult rider

$  5  child rider under 16yrs

$15  lead rein walker & rider combo

$10  walker (under 16 walkers free)

STRICTLY NO DOGS !  Both treks go across working farms and access has kindly been made available, and the memorial is on private property.

 

We have overnight stay facilities for horses and riders. please see Places To Stay for more information.

 

We have TWO rides.

 

RIDE 1:

15 February 2015: Hayland homestead 10km round trip:

 

Ride or walk from the woolshed over a scenic route taking in Mt Thomas views, farmland tracks and the Garry River (puddle!) to the lower cemetery paddock and return. Not suitable for wagons.

Walkers depart by 10 am. Horses depart at 1045.

Trail leaders: Florence West and LizThomas.

Horses have the right of way at all times.

Rangiora Equine is providing veterinary backup and two mounted St Johns is joining the ride .

 

RIDE 2:

15 February 2015: Okuku Country Estate Ride 6km round trip

 

Start at Rakahuri Road deer gate entrance, to then travel the original Birch Hill Station driveway to the lower cemetery paddock for the commemoration service and then return.

Pass by a marble tribute to “Kakahu” Lt Col EB Millton's favourite NZ military horse.

Walkers depart 10.30am, at 11am the VIP lead wagon will depart. Followed by lead rein, riders and then at a distance the donkeys and mules as they too played a major role in WWI as first aid support and transport. Medics will be walking with you.

 

Sorry no prams with walkers - if a horse jumps the pram wont!

South Canterbury mounted riflemen - Major David Grant on his horse Jack.

Major Grant was killed within 24 hours of arriving in Dardanelles.

Jack continued on to France and was killed at the Somme.

Please bring any old stirrups for our new hitching rail as we are planning a

"mounted rifle stirrup fence" with single irons hanging in rows. 

 

Bring plenty of cash as there will be great refreshments and memorabillia to buy.

Walkers bring a seat or a rug.
